In 1996, Todd DiMartino founded Skyline Construction in San Francisco. During his time with the company, he held the positions of president, majority stockholder and chairman of the board. DiMartino left the company in 2005, but has recently taken the skills and experiences he acquired on his past jobs to create his new company, Dettaglio Construction Inc. (DCI). “I think that years of experience with all facets of construction and employee management has helped hone my skills and makes me more focused on the correct path for DCI,” he says. “Managing people and how to go about growing a business are probably the largest assets I’ve taken from my work history. I’ve been able to see the things that work when growing a business and the things that didn’t work, and I’m trying to use those experiences to navigate through my involvement with DCI.”

DiMartino led Skyline Construction to over $250 million in sales over a period of eight years. He stepped down as president in June 2004 and became chairman of the board. Then in 2005, DiMartino sold his shares in the company and Skyline converted to a 100 percent employee-owned organization. A seven-year non-compete clause provided DiMartino with time to spend with his family and rediscover his passion for construction.

“It was definitely a recharging time, but what it really did was it make me reflect on what my actual passion was,” DiMartino says. “I like to build things and I like to see things change. I like to see a piece of dirt change into a Bank of America branch, or a place where people live. There’s nothing more fulfilling than driving by a project and thinking that you’ve had a hand in completely changing or building anew. When I was gone, I missed the action and I missed the thrill of the everyday grind. I’m a type-A personality and I need that excitement.”

The location holds special significance beyond its strategic location. Todd DiMartino, the president of DCI, did extensive work in the building, and DiMartino names the building as one of two that helped launch Skyline, his previous venture.  “Being in this location is like coming home again,” DiMartino explains.  “When I learned that space was available here, it seemed like a natural choice to come back to a comfortable, familiar, successful environment.”
